Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

Point System Overage and Bot Pricing Inflation

high overage

Poe uses a point-based consumption system where each AI interaction consumes points from your monthly allocation. Users report severe point inflation, with bot costs increasing from 20 points to 373 points, and Web-Search bot falsely advertising 8-15 points but actually consuming 99 points per query. The free tier provides minimal points, and even paid subscriptions (10,000 points/month) can be depleted by 1-2 complex queries.

Welcome to Mario Kart World but for AI. Some bots are free on some websites but on Poe is like 3000+ points *MINIMUM*, some bots are even more outrageous claiming they don't require subscription but need a f***ing 200000 quota per message which is impossible to not subscribe to Poe because if you use the basic plan you can only have a maximum of 3000 quotas.

trustpilot

Worst thing is that Poe themselves are starting to lie on me. The Web-Search bot is like the cheapest Web-trained bot claiming that it only consumes 8-15 points well this is a lie because it's actually 99 points which drains my balance to zero in a minute.

2

Token Cache Costs for Long Conversations

medium overage

Poe charges for context retention in conversations through a 'history cache' token policy. Users report being able to write only 3-5 story sections per day on the paid tier before exhausting their 10,000 token monthly limit. Additionally, rejected prompts, rewrites, and error responses still consume tokens without delivering value.

trustpilot

Further annoying: If a bot rejects your prompt or you want it to fix/rewrite it, it still costs many tokens. Especially bad for storywriting is their "history cache" token policy. You can barely write 3-5 story sections per day, before your 10k limit runs out. Laughable for a paid service!

On top of that the bots at times fail to process a response due to a glitch and I STILL lose points. I keep a screen recording and a screenshot of this and reported to them but never received a response.

3

Forced Mid-Subscription Upgrades

critical addon

Users report being forced to upgrade to higher-priced tiers after purchasing an annual subscription. One user subscribed at HK$399/year and was immediately unable to access previously free features, with demands to upgrade to HK$1,600/year (a 4x increase). This represents an immediate 300% cost escalation beyond the advertised subscription price.

I subscribed at HK$399/year and right after that I was not able to use the Assistant and other LLMs which were free to use before subscription, and I was demanded immediately to pay to upgrade to HK$1600/year.

4

API Quality Markup Without Value

medium addon

Poe charges significant markups on third-party AI models (Claude, GPT, Grok) without providing equivalent quality. Users report that API implementations for Grok and ChatGPT do not access live data and produce lower-quality responses compared to using the models directly through their native platforms. The token markup is substantial: Claude Sonnet costs €3/1M tokens officially, but Poe charges €20/month for 1M tokens.

trustpilot

Their API implementations for Grok-4 and ChatGPT-5 did not access live-data and the responses where not of the same quality as via xAI's and OpenAI's websites.

trustpilot

10k tokens for over €5/month is just bad and the next 1m token tier costs €20/month. When I check the official pricing of Claude Sonnet I see that it actually costs a fraction, they stat €3 for 1m tokens?? So what is Poe.com extra-charging for exactly?...

Example: True Cost for 25 Users

License (25 × $19.99 × 12) $5,997/yr
Point System Overage and Bot Pricing Inflation +50-100% of subscription cost
Token Cache Costs for Long Conversations +30-50% of token allocation
Forced Mid-Subscription Upgrades +300-400% of initial subscription cost
API Quality Markup Without Value +570% markup vs. direct API costs
Estimated Year 1 Total ~$0
That's roughly 0.0× the advertised license price. The median Poe contract is $3,000/yr across Vendr purchases.
