Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

Manual Downgrade Required

high overage

When your subscriber count decreases, ConvertKit does not automatically downgrade your plan. You must manually contact support to request a downgrade, or you'll continue being charged for the higher tier even though you have fewer subscribers.

trustpilot

I was paying $119/mo for Convert Kit as I was on the 10k plan (roughly 9,500 subscribers) I clean out my list a few weeks back (deleted 2,200), so now have about 7,300 subs. Which would put me on the 8k plan ($99/mo). I got billed for the 10k bc I didn’t manually reach out to downgrade my account. I have to manually reach out to downgrade?

trustpilot

Disgusting the way they automatically increase your plant, but they will NOT do it when you decrease it. I got charged for an annual plan, (6 month pending). Since I noticed my charge 30+ days after it being done, they would not adjust my pricing or plan, so now I have less subscribers and charged for a plan I AM NOT USING.

2

Unexpected price increases without adequate notice

high addon

ConvertKit has raised prices significantly (up to 50%) without properly informing customers in advance, leading to unexpected billing increases for existing users.

trustpilot

last year, they raised their prices 50% without telling customers

trustpilot

Disgusting the way they automatically increase your plant, but they will NOT do it when you decrease it.

3

Account suspension and termination without warning

critical compliance

Multiple users report having their accounts suspended or terminated without clear explanation or warning, even for new accounts that haven't sent emails yet. This can result in loss of subscriber data and business disruption.

trustpilot

My brand-new account was shut down before I even had the chance to send my first emails. Kit claimed it was due to concerns about affiliate marketing, even though I hadn't engaged in any affiliate promotions—just had plans for the future to include them responsibly.

trustpilot

Terrible experience with ConvertKit! They closed my account for no reason and even asked me to change my business name—how ridiculous is that? Instead of supporting creators, they make arbitrary decisions with no explanation. Avoid if you don't want your business disrupted! Stole my 680 subscription emails.

4

Confusing and inconsistent pricing display

medium addon

The pricing displayed varies across different pages within the platform, making it difficult to understand what you'll actually be charged. Users report seeing different amounts on the upgrade page, billing page, and cancellation page.

trustpilot

At one point you might be asked to upgrade to a $49 plan which then shows up as $29 on the billing page, which later shows up as $79 when you go to cancel, only for them to let you know it's actually $129.

5

Difficult account cancellation and deletion process

medium support

Canceling or deleting a ConvertKit account is unnecessarily complex and time-consuming. Some users report being locked out of their account entirely upon cancellation instead of being downgraded to the free tier, and account deletion can take over 30 days.

trustpilot

Cancelled my paid plan as it is hugely overpriced since the switch to KIT.COM (Formerly convertkit.com). Instead of putting me back to the free account I was originally on. They completely blocked me from my account! They also won't let me access anything unless I pay another month.

trustpilot

I've been waiting for over six weeks now. With other services, you can simply click a button and your account is gone. Why does Kit's legal team need to get involved?

6

Automatic Upgrades Without Notice

critical overage

ConvertKit automatically upgrades your plan and charges you when your subscriber count increases, but requires manual intervention to downgrade when subscribers decrease. This creates a one-way billing escalation.

trustpilot

Disgusting the way they automatically increase your plant, but they will NOT do it when you decrease it.

7

Mid-Contract Price Increases

critical compliance

Users report significant and unexpected price increases during their subscription period, with some experiencing price triples or increases from $49 to $129 with poor communication about the changes.

trustpilot

Bought in on one plan, the price then tripled.

trustpilot

ConvertKit is a fraudulent company with really poor business practices that fails at communicating their pricing and billing. At one point you might be asked to upgrade to a $49 plan which then shows up as $29 on the billing page, which later shows up as $79 when you go to cancel, only for them to let you know it’s actually $129.

8

Refund Policy Restrictions

high support

Users report that ConvertKit does not offer refunds even when billing errors occur or when downgrade requests are made within 24 hours of being charged.

trustpilot

I emailed support, and she downgraded my account (within 24 hours of being billed), and she told me they don't offer refunds.

9

Subscriber-Based Price Scaling

high overage

Pricing increases significantly as your subscriber count grows. While the base Creator plan starts at $33/month, actual costs scale with list size—reaching $119/month for 10,000 subscribers and approximately $400/month for 50,000+ subscribers.

reddit

For 10k subscribers: EmailOctopus: $40 / month, Mailerlite: $73 / month, Mailchimp: $135 / month (standard plan), Convertkit: $119 / month

reddit

it's a good deal for the start, but i think gonna be quite expensive as you grow your list. it cost like 400 bucks / mo for a list of 50K+. you can find better deals with other platforms

10

Account Suspension Risk

critical compliance

Multiple users report sudden account closures or restrictions without clear explanation, sometimes mid-campaign. Accounts have been shut down for perceived affiliate marketing violations even when users claim compliance with terms. This can result in lost subscriber access and business disruption.

I signed up for CONVERTKit Trial and the first thing I noticed is there are very LIMITED capabilities... I was prompted to seek help and did so in regard to the restrictions... During the "verification" they ask why would you use the platform, socials, and website information... As I provide my socials etc- I get a response stating "At this time, we don't believe our platform is the right fit for your business, so we are unable to support your account.......Per those terms, your account has been cancelled effective immediately"

11

Poor Customer Support for Billing Issues

medium support

Multiple users report unhelpful customer support when dealing with billing disputes, refund requests, or account downgrades. Support often provides automated responses or refuses refunds even when pricing changes occur mid-cycle.

trustpilot

I emailed support, and she downgraded my account (within 24 hours of being billed), and she told me they don't offer refunds.

trustpilot

Customer service sent me in a loop of automated messages. When I finally did get to speak to someone they didn't really listen.
